Pedophilia and church: the wedding is valid even when the celebrant priest is a pedophile
I'm sure you have read the news about the newly-married-couple at Bracciano (Province of Rome) who asked recently the annulment of their wedding because it was celebrated by the Rev. Crocetti, who was later found guilty of pedophilia. Here is the link to one of the
many articles written about that story.
The news now is that Monsignor Del Ciuco sent a letter to the daily Tuscia-web to say that....." the sacrament of matrimony is valid either if it celebrated by a saint or by a pedophile". What do you think about it? Are we all ignorant as the Monsignor is saying or can we say something different? I sympathize with the newly-married-couple !!
Here is the letter sent by Monsignor Salvatore del Ciuco
Viterbo - December 5 - 2008 - 4.30 p.m.
We have read in the local and national newspapers the news that two attorneys have asked the Sacred Roman Rota to obtain the annulment of the matrimony of a young newly-wed-couple on the ground of the indignity of the priest, who was afterward found guilty of pedophilia.
I'm sorry for the attorneys for they could have avoided to appear so incompetent.
That's because the Sacred Roman Rota Tribunal, receiving their request, couldn't but underline their gross ignorance of the Canon Law.
They in fact had to be aware that the ministers of the wedding are the same persons who are getting married, being the role of the priest limited to that of a witness.
And that means the sacrament is valid independently from the "dignity" of the priest.
If the attorneys had been more familiar with St. Augustine they would have known the saint had written the following: 'Petrus baptizat, Judas baptizat, Cristus baptizat'.
Either it was Peter ( a saint) to baptize or Judas (a traitor), it is the same Jesus who is baptizing. For the good peace of all of you, the sacrament of matrimony is valid either if it's celebrated by a saint or if it's celebrated by a pedophile.
Monsignor Salvatore Del Ciuco.
